I had the pleasure of watching Shrek the Musical on opening night at the Segerstrom Center for the Performing Arts in Costa Mesa. And let me tell you, it was truly entertaining, but what made it even more special was watching it with my two boys, who were watching their first ever musical theater performance. “Wow, everyone is dressed fancy,” my boy said noting the well-dressed crowd at the theater. Since it was a school night, I didn’t have time to “dress them fancy” as we made our way to the venue. But fashion aside, it was the SHOW that truly got them. Much more than just a Broadway version of the Shrek movies, Shrek the Musical goes deeper and creates a back story for Shrek, Fiona and Lord Farquad. Read my 6 year old’s account of the evening.
While the songs weren’t very catchy for me, the production as a whole was truly clever. I was amazed by the way they “shrunk” down Farquad by having the actor playing him perform on his knees throughout the show. Also brilliant was the puppet dragon.
This is the last weekend of Shrek the Musical in Orange County, so if you have a chance, bring your kids over to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa and share in a truly entertaining family theater experience.
