The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe staged in Costa Mesa to encourage literacy

I applaud any program that encourages literacy. This one came my way and I thought that it would be great to share with you.  Local OC readers can actually watch the play and support the program,  while my readers from around the country may be inspired to start their own literary adventure programs.

This week, the Crossing Church in Costa Mesa is bringing The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis to life for students in their new  state-of-the-art auditorium June 15, 16 and 18.  According to the press release: “Five elementary schools in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District are currently participating in a literary adventure to read the book, and students who finish it will receive complimentary tickets to the play. The “Literary Adventure” is a new idea conceptualized through the collective efforts of five local churches (The Crossing, ROCKHarbor, St. Andrews, Lighthouse Church and Newport Mesa). More than 50 volunteers from these churches will be donating their time to read to students during school days.”  With all the budget cuts in our public schools, especially in the arts,  it is heartwarming to see volunteers who step up and get creative in providing our students with much needed exposure to art and literature.
